Selling everything (or trying to) before moving abroad

My family and I were moving to Spain. We decided to sell all that we could and donate the rest. It was my job to list the items — over 200, under a deadline: the day of our one-way flight.

Leading up to the big move, I pored over the Facebook Groups reading other people's experiences doing the same. The question of "What did you do with all your stuff?" came up all the time. It turns out that no one-size approach fits all situations.

The accidental strategy

Selling everything wasn't one big event. We downsized to the essentials in stages, each mini move acting as a soft deadline.

What I tried and how it stacked up

Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Nextdoor, Craigslist, Facebook Groups, and an online garage sale app I built myself.

My recommendations

Have realistic expectations on pricing. Start early. Don't over-invest in your listings. Keep your eye on the prize.

The moral of the story

Selling all your stuff requires flexibility and creativity. The apps aren't bad if you need to sell a few things. But they are not cut out to deal with moving sales.
