What's the best way to have an online garage sale?

Most people end up cobbling something together — a Facebook group, a Facebook album, a shared Flickr, a spreadsheet, a Craigslist post. These aren't solutions. They're workarounds. They solve the display problem (here are my things) and leave everything else — offers, negotiation, item tracking, communication — on you. SaleAway is the purpose-built version. Bulk-add items by photo, set up a pop-up sale page with everything on it, schedule it for up to 7 days, share one link. Buyers can bundle multiple items into a single offer instead of one back-and-forth per item. Item statuses update automatically as offers come in. No spreadsheet, no album, no manual tracking, no DMs piling up across three different apps. You bring the buyers by sharing your sale's link: post it on social, drop it in your local Buy Nothing group, print the QR code on a yard sign, hand out flyers, or even take out an ad in the local paper. SaleAway gives you ready-made graphics and copy-paste captions to make sharing easier. Buyers don't even need an account to browse or make their first offer (they create one if you accept). And if you schedule your sale in advance, anyone who Watches it gets notified the moment it goes live.

If you're trying to sell everything — your whole apartment, a parent's house, the entire garage — yes, SaleAway is built for exactly this. The idea of listing 200+ items one at a time on Facebook Marketplace is what made me build this in the first place. Also built for: downsizing, clearing out a parent's house, post-renovation purge, seasonal decluttering, making room before a baby, or finally dealing with the garage.

Why not just use Facebook Marketplace (or OfferUp, or Nextdoor)?

You can! And honestly, you probably will for some stuff. But those platforms — and most others like them — are designed to keep buyers browsing one item at a time. Their "power seller" tools are overkill for casual sellers, and the regular flow makes you handle one item, one conversation, one negotiation at a time. SaleAway was built for when you have a lot to sell at once: every item on one page, multi-item offers, structured negotiation, no endless DMs.

Why can't buyers just message me about an item?

Because open-ended messages lead to more messages, most of which go nowhere. "Is this available?" "What's the lowest you'll go?" "Can you deliver this $1 item across the city to me?" These are the questions SaleAway is designed to avoid. To be efficient with a lot of items, you need structure. SaleAway separates questions (about the item itself) from offers (about buying it), so you know what kind of response is needed. Once you agree on a price, chat opens up to coordinate. This keeps things moving and filters out people who aren't serious. Communication still happens at the moments that matter — buyers can add a message with their initial offer, and either side can leave a note when declining, withdrawing, or cancelling. The point isn't to be cold, it's to make sure messages happen when they actually need to.

What about ghosting?

It can still happen, unfortunately — I can't force anyone to show up. But SaleAway is designed to minimize wasted time on both ends. Every offer expires in 24 hours if either side doesn't respond, so you're never stuck waiting to hear back. And once an offer is accepted, there's a 48-hour window to complete the handoff — if nothing happens, the deal auto-cancels and items go back up for sale. (Sellers can extend the window in 24-hour increments if a buyer needs more time.) Nothing sits in limbo.

How does payment work?

SaleAway doesn't process payments and doesn't take a cut. You'll never give SaleAway your bank info. SaleAway handles the negotiation — offers, counter-offers, and chat once you agree on a price. After that, you and the buyer coordinate payment and pickup yourselves based on your shared preferences (cash, Venmo, Zelle, whatever works). For safety, doing payment in person at the time of pickup is recommended.

What happens when my sale ends?

Sold items stay in your inventory, marked sold. Unsold items also stay in your inventory — you can add them to another sale without re-listing. Open offers stay valid until they expire or are completed.

Ughhh, AI...

I get it. Here's how it works: snap a photo, and AI suggests a title, description, price, category, and condition. You can use all of it, some of it, or none of it — every field is editable. SaleAway is also up front about when AI is used in a listing, so your buyers don't have to wonder. If you'd rather skip AI entirely, just type everything yourself. Either way, adding items is fast.
